The Index of Economic Sentiment (IES) in Slovakia increased by 0.3 points month-on-month in April 2014 to 96.5 points, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced April 30.

The increase was due to increased levels of confidence in the categories of services, industry, trade and consumers. Meanwhile, confidence in the construction sector fell m-o-m. The IES was 3.9 points higher than in April 2013. Nonetheless, it was still 8 points below the long-term average.

Confidence in industry rose by 2.4 points m-o-m in April to 0.7 points, which is 1.3 points below the long-term average. The increase was due to positive prospects in industry for the next three months, the TASR newswire wrote. The confidence indicator in construction fell by 6 points m-o-m to minus 31 points due to more negative evaluations of current demand and employment prospects. It was also 3 points below the long-term average.

Confidence in trade increased by 2.4 points m-o-m in April, mainly due to positive evaluations of current business conditions and stock levels. Trust in the service sector increased by 7.4 points m-o-m to 11.7 points, mainly due to positive evaluations of current and expected demand, while the current business situation was evaluated in negative terms.

The consumer atmosphere in April improved because of more optimistic prospects for future developments in the country’s economy and unemployment. The consumer confidence index was up 1.1 points m-o-m in April to minus 13.5 points. Compared to the same month in 2013, it increased by 16.5 points.
