2 May 2014 Flash News
UNIVERSITY teacher and former constitutional judge Ján Drgonec, barrister Pavol Malich and judge Juraj Sopoliga will run for the post of the last, sixth spot among the nominees, of whom the president will choose three to replace judges of the Constitutional Court (CC) whose tenures expire in July. Five candidates were already elected by parliament in April.
Drgonec, nominated by dean of the Law School of the Pan-European University in Bratislava Jaroslav Ivor, was also running in the April vote, but failed to get enough votes. The new candidates are Malich, nominated by chair of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) Ján Figeľ, and Sopoliga, nominated by Dana Bystrianska, president of the Slovak Association of Judges (ZSS), the SITA newswire reported on April 30.
The hearing of the candidates by the parliamentary constitutional committee will take place on May 6.
Parliament has already selected five nominees for the CC judge post: Supreme Court judge Jana Baricová, who received 78 votes, nominated by her boss, Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin; Nitra Regional Court judge Ján Bernát, backed by 78 MPs, nominated by General Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár; notary and university teacher Miroslav Duriš, supported with 77 votes, nominated by head of the Chamber of Notaries Karol Kovács; Bratislava District Court chair Eva Fulcová, backed by 79 votes, nominated by Kovács and dean of Comenius University’s Faculty of Law Pavol Kubíček; and Košice Regional Court chairman Imrich Volkai, a nominee of the dean of the Košice-based Faculty of Law of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, Gabriela Dobrovičová, who received 84 votes.
