Manneken Pis goes Slovak to mark 10 years in EU
5 May 2014 Flash News
THE FAMOUS Brussels icon, the bronze statue of Manneken Pis, has taken on a Slovak appearance, donning a traditional folk costume from the area of Detva (Banská Bystrica Region) on May 4 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the European Union.
The celebrations, which also involved a demonstration of Slovak folk traditions, folk crafts and tastings of local wines and dishes, were among several attended by Princess Lea of Belgium, representatives of the Slovak Embassy to Belgium and the European Commission, representatives of Slovakia's regions and various local tourism authorities.
"Despite the cold weather, many people took part in the event and we've managed to bring Slovak culture right to the heart of Brussels," said Slovak Ambassador to Belgium Ján Kuderjavý.
