Smer accused of bribery
6 May 2014 Flash News
GENERAL Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár has ordered the Special Prosecutor’s Office to look into information published by the Plus 7 Dní weekly pointing to an alleged connection between two businessmen, members of the Salmanov family, who were charged with corruption and the ruling Smer party.
“He has issued an order for a quick and proper verification of the published information, since they pertain to the suspicions of the crime of corruption,” Andrea Predajňová, spokesperson for the General Prosecutor’s Office, told the Sme daily.
Former Šamorín tax office head Mária Zakálová, a Smer member, testified in the case of the Salmanov family. She said that back in 2010 she was hired as the head of Šamorín’s tax office after giving €33,000 in an envelope as a sponsorship gift to the head of Smer’s branch in Dunajská Streda, Štefan Radics. According to her, Sergei Salmanov gave her the money, as reported by Sme.
This happened in March 2010, i.e. at the end of the term of the first Robert Fico government. In the 2012 parliamentary elections Radics was 138th on Smer’s slate. He also ran unsuccessfully for the post in the Trnava regional parliament in the recent elections.
Neither Smer nor Radics, who currently serves as mayor in Hubice, Dunajská Streda district, have commented on the accusation. Radics only said he has to discuss the matter with someone, and that he may comment on it next week. An employee of the town hall in Hubice said he is currently abroad.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office has not said yet whether it has finished looking into the accusations against Smer.
The trial with Sergei and Alexander Salmanov is planned for next week. The men were arrested in April 2013 and have been in custody since. Shortly before they were detained, someone murdered their former lawyer, Ľubica Kolesárová, who wanted to testify against them. The investigation of that murder is still ongoing, Sme wrote.
