Constitutional committee recommends protection of marriage
6 May 2014 Flash News
THE PARLIAMENTARY constitutional committee has approved the new definition of marriage as a unique union between a man and a woman for the constitution and advised parliament to pass it.
The proposal, authored by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and supported by 40 MPs, is the same as the one included in the constitutional amendment prepared in cooperation with the ruling Smer party that also includes judiciary reform. The agreement was however made after the KDH actually submitted its own motion to the parliament, the TASR newswire reported.
If the parliament clears the KDH’s proposal, two sentences will be added to the constitution: “Marriage is a unique bond between a man and a woman. The Slovak Republic protects marriage universally and contributes towards its well-being.”
The wording is different from the original proposal, as the chair of the committee, Smer’s Róbert Madej, proposed to omit the numbers in the wordings “one man” and “one woman”, as he considered them redundant, TASR wrote.
Parliament will discuss the proposal at its May session.
