THE SHARE of Slovak products purchased in the shops increased by 5 percent to 59 percent in 2013, the TASR newswire reported on May 6.

“This increase represents €300 million spent on Slovak products and potential for creating new jobs,” Bohumila Tauchmannová, member of the Association of Trade and Tourism (ZOCR), told the press, as quoted by TASR. The press conference was held in Bratislava to mark the opening of the fourth Quality from Our Regions (KzNR) educational project.

Tauchmannová also said that Slovak consumers are getting better at determining the country of origin of products and are even willing to pay extra money for quality Slovak goods.

“This year we will continue doing what we did in previous years; that is, to educate consumers through supermarket chains, through producers, through labelling,” Tauchmannová said, as quoted by TASR, adding that they will also continue educating farmers in primary production in nine Slovak towns.

Tauchmannová further noted that in the future the KzNR project will expand to include other facilities such as hotels, restaurants, cafés, canteens and school meals.

“These should also increase the consumption of Slovak products,” she added, as quoted by TASR.
