Most Beautiful Slovak Books
19 May 2014 Compiled by Spectator staff Culture & Society
EACH year the Bibiana Inter-national House of Art for Chi-ldren announces the compe-tition for the Most Beautiful Books of Slovakia. For 2013, publishers submitted 112 books, out of which an international jury selected six for awards based on their artistic and graphic layout, technical quality and overall attractiveness. The Most Beautiful Books of Slovakia 2013 collection was chosen, too, which consists of 24 titles.
The Slovak Culture award went to publisher Knižná Dielňa); the award for excellent illustrations went to Veronika Holecová, with the award for excellent graphic design going to Ján Šicko. The award of the Association of the Printing Industry in Slovakia went to the Neogra-fia Martin printing house. The Bibiana Award for best children’s book went to the Slovart Publishing House. The Slovak National Library award for students’ work went to Kristína Kubáňová and Lenka Šturmankinová.
In the 22nd year of the competition, a jury compo-sed of printers, graphic designers, illustrators, art theoreticians and ministry representatives handed out 24 diplomas. The award-winning books and all the competing submissions can be viewed daily at the eponymous exhibition at Bibiana, on Panská 41, except for Mondays, until June 8.
“Books that participated in the competition were mo-stly above average or at least average,” head of the jury, illustrator Juraj Martiška, told the TASR newswire. “Thus, the level of books is good, despite all that has been said about books and publishing them in Slovakia.”
