SAC condemns Fico's words on foreign military presence in Slovakia

IT IS unacceptable to compare solidarity among allies and support within NATO to the presence of occupying troops of the Warsaw Pact in Czechoslovakia after 1968, the non-governmental think tank Slovak Atlantic Commission (SAC) wrote in a statement on June 9, in reaction to recent statements made by Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Fico responded last week to US President Barack Obama’s plans to reassess the presence of US military forces in Europe, in light of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, by drawing a link between the presence of foreign armed forces in Slovakia and the Soviet occupation following 1968, claiming that he simply cannot imagine such a scenario.

"Such evaluating and historical relativism directly jeopardises confidence in Slovakia and harms our security," wrote the SAC, as quoted by TASR.

SAC at the same time urged the Slovak government to push for measures that would bolster security and increase confidence in Slovakia within NATO and the European Union.
