Prime Minister Robert Fico will attend a session of the European Council in Brussels on June 26 and 27 to discuss economic growth, competitiveness and employment, including climate and energy issues.
European leaders will evaluate progress in a prepared new framework for climate and energy after 2020, with the aim of adopting a final decision on the matter by October 2014. The EU summit will also include a trip by European leaders to Ypres in Belgium to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. The working dinner in Ypres will feature talks on the EU’s strategic priorities for the next five years.
A European energy security strategy will be discussed for the first time. The strategy was adopted by the European Commission in line with the results of the March EU summit, the TASR newswire wrote. The strategy addresses challenges in energy security, energy transit and the reduction of the EU’s dependency on foreign energy supplies. According to the strategy, the EU should adopt immediate measures at the European and regional levels to ensure security in this sphere.
Other topics of discussion should include the current situation in Ukraine, the Commission’s report on awarding Albania the status of a candidate country and Lithuania’s accession to the eurozone in 2015.
One of the main issues of the summit is the Freedom, Security and Justice strategy, the so-called Post-Stockholm Programme) in migration and asylum politics, border management and court cooperation, according to the SITA newswire. One of the fundamental objectives of the European Union is to offer its citizens an area of freedom, security, and justice without internal borders.
