THE NORTHERN-SLOVAK areas of Terchová and Vrátna dolina will receive a €3-million financial aid from the state to spend on relief work after last week’s landslides and torrential rains.

The cabinet approved the aid for Terchová at its extraordinary session July 28. The Finance Ministry is to release €3.06 million by July 31, the SITA newswire reported. Of the sum, €1.8 million will go to the Žilina regional government, and €1.26 will go to the village of Terchová.

On the evening of July 21, torrential rains and even landslides occurred in to some parts of Slovakia. In the Vrátna Dolina, a valley close to the municipality of Terchová, 21 people reported their cars trapped.

Dozens of people have been left cut off in the Vrátna mountain chalet and on the ridge of Malá Fatra mountains, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Removing debris and repairing damage caused by the devastating flood will take the Slovak Water Management Company (ŠVP) between two to three months, with the costs estimated at €2 million, Environment Ministry State Secretary Vojtech Ferencz said July 24.
