Former Radičová advisor to challenge Frešo for SDKÚ chair

ONDREJ Matej, a former SDKÚ MP and erstwhile advisor to former prime minister Iveta Radičová, is set to challenge the party’s chairman, Pavol Frešo, in a contest for the post at the upcoming SDKÚ congress scheduled for September 27, the TASR newswire reported on September 22.

Matej unveiled his plans at a press conference in Bratislava at which he was backed by five heads of the SDKÚ’s regional associations - Viliam Novotný (Košice Region), Stanislav Horník (Banská Bystrica Region), Eduard Vokál (Prešov Region), Tibor Tóth (Nitra Region) and Alexander Slafkovský (authorised by the management of Žilina Region). Matej said that Frešo stated that he would present at the congress changes for the party with respect to personnel and the programme for the 2016 general election, and if he does not succeed with the presented changes, he will not run for the post of chairman.

“We don’t want to remove Pavol Frešo from the post, but I can’t imagine a situation in which he would remain in office if his written commitments weren’t accepted, ” Matej said, as quoted by TASR. “That’s why we’re ready to form an alternative.”

Meanwhile, the former head of the private broadcaster Expres Radio and manager of several companies, including the marketing department of the Sme daily, Eva Babitzová, announced that she wants to enter the party and join Matej’s team.

Frešo responded that he will not be a candidate for the post of election leader in 2015 and he will pass this post to the current SDKÚ deputy chair, Martini Fedor. However, Frešo wants to remain the leader of the party until the parliamentary elections in 2016, according to TASR.

“I am elected for four years and I will not give up this post,” Frešo said, as quoted by TASR. “If they submit a proposal for my recall, I will deal with it, but if such a proposal comes, it will not be accepted, according to my opinion.”
