Police launch investigation of Procházka’s campaign financing

POLICE launched criminal prosecution concerning tax evasion based on an audio recording of a private conversation between Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) leader Igor Matovič and then-presidential candidate Radoslav Procházka (Sieť), the TASR newswire reported on September 24.

Matovič expressed his hope that the police will investigate the matter thoroughly and reveal the truth.

“After all, we cannot continue to live forever in a state where it is possible to launder hundreds of thousands of illegal euros in a campaign with impunity and use them to pull the wool over people’s eyes as to how much he cares about them and wants to protect them,” Matovič told TASR, referring to slogans from Procházka’s campaign.

Police have now passed the case to the General Prosecutor’s Office, which will now decide whether to press charges or terminate the proceedings.

Sieť spokesman Ján Orlovský declined to comment.

“Let’s wait for further steps – the summoning for an interrogation – and see,” he said, as quoted by TASR.

The recording was published online after Procházka refused to take a lie detector test, to which he was challenged by Matovič following his public accusations against Procházka of financing the presidential campaign illegally. The recording captures the discussion between the two men about posting election campaign ads in Matovič’s newspapers off the books. Procházka admitted that the voice in the recording belongs to him, but maintains that the material was tampered with, TASR wrote.
