Fico wants to cut wages for MPs holding multiple posts

IF AN elected MP simultaneously serves as a mayor or holds the post of at least a local deputy, he or she should earn only the minimum wage for those additional posts, and not a full second or third salary, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. He proposed for this change to be enacted after the 2016 parliamentary elections, the Sme daily reported on September 29.

For example, Peter Fitz of Smer is a deputy in the national parliament, the mayor of the village of Šenkvice and a member of the Bratislava City Council. While now he earns some €6,000 monthly, under the new rules he would receive one third less.

Some opposition politicians have criticised the proposal, saying that it is part of the campaign ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for November 15, pointing out that Smer rejected three similar proposals by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) in 2014. The difference is that the KDH pushed for the principle of a single mandate or salary, while Fico wants MPs to perform in their additional elected posts for minimum wage.

“It is a hypocritical proposal,” said KDH MP Július Brocka, as quoted by Sme. “[Smer] realised that people oppose joint functions, so they came up with a proposal which will not be effective until 2016.”

Fico admitted during a press conference that this issue was discussed in parliament this year, but stated that previous proposals had numerous shortcomings. He also said that Smer’s proposal will be discussed after the municipal elections, contrary to the previous proposals, which he also labelled as part of the opposition’s election campaign, in a video published on Sme’s website.
