SLOVAK photographers were awarded in several categories of 20th Czech Press Photo (CPP) competition. One of the dominant topics of this year was the conflict in Ukraine.

The Photograph of the Year became a picture by Czech photographer Filip Singer from Kiev. It is called Beginning and depicts a man with his face covered in blood, captured in front of a picture of saints. It was created in November 2013 when Ukrainian police units, Berkut, brutally suppressed a peaceful demonstration against the regime of then president Viktor Yanukovych, which started mass protests at the Maidan Square in Kiev, the Sme daily reported.

“The Photograph of the Year CPP 2014 shows the most important current European conflict,” reads the statement of the international jury, as quoted on the official website. “The personal pain of the unknown man touches us all. The man in the picture seems to be crying blood while the rows of saints look on in silence. We regard this photograph with multiple meanings and as a metaphor for the human suffering in military conflicts.”

Also Slovak photographers reported success in the competition. Tomáš Halász, who accompanied Slovak President Andrej Kiska before the March elections, won the People in the News category. His photo-essay called Road to the palace, Andrej Kiska’s presidential campaign, was published in Mono online magazine. The essay was also awarded the Photo of the Year 2014 prize organised by VÚB Foundation, Sme wrote.

Slovak photographer Juraj Mravec placed second in the General News category with his 24 hours on the barricades photo made in Kiev.

AFP newswire’s photographer of Slovak origin Joe Klamar, who works in the US, won second place in the Art and Entertainment category with a series of photos from the Oscar ceremony, Sme reported.
