Beblavý indicates relation between Košecký and Gašparovič

LADISLAV Košecký, former executive director of the Economy Ministry-owned company MH Development, who has been recently charged by the police for several pieces of mischief related to his post, is a close relative of former president Ivan Gašparovič, opposition MP Miroslav Beblavý said on November 5.

LADISLAV Košecký, former executive director of the Economy Ministry-owned company MH Development, who has been recently charged by the police for several pieces of mischief related to his post, is a close relative of former president Ivan Gašparovič, opposition MP Miroslav Beblavý said on November 5.

According to the MP, Košecký and Igor Hyža, the current director of Košecký’s company Mertimex, from which the former hired a car for the state agency (the case for which Košecký lost his post), have represented Gašparovič’s family in securing construction work documentation and in other projects. The information was first revealed by the Nový Čas daily.

“Such a close connection to the top state representative is enough to be a scandal on its own and needs to be independently investigated, especially considering the fact that Gašparovič has described himself as virtually a member of Smer,” Beblavý said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

In addition, Košecký’s activities at MH Development were not supervised by any old bureaucrats but by Smer’s political nominees. For example, Eva Karasová served as former economy minister Tomáš Malatinský’s office director, Beblavý added.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška said he sent a letter to the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) requesting that an inspection be carried out at state-owned MH Development. He said so after the special session initiated by the opposition to discuss the issue which, however, failed to be convened. The session was initiated by Beblavý who did not like the decision of Smer not to send inspectors of the NKÚ to the company.

“I turned with a letter to the NKÚ chairman [Ján Jasovský] to conduct an audit at the company,” Paška said, as quoted by TASR. “That is also why I viewed the [special] session today as completely useless.”

Paška called the opposition initiative “nothing but a promotion of the political homeless who are likely to bother us not only up until the municipal elections [November 15] but also in the parliamentary election with issues that I consider to be absolutely worthless and I do not intend to pay them any attention in parliament, which is already overwhelmed with legislative proposals as it is”, as reported by TASR.

Paška continued that MH Development will be scrutinised not only by the ministerial bodies, but also law enforcement officials.

Opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) considers the failure to convene the special session to be disappointing.

“Our effort was not in vain, however, as the economy and interior ministers already announced decision to not only dismiss the people responsible, but also to start criminal prosecution over the MH Development case,” KDH chairman Ján Figeľ said, as quoted by TASR.
