VOTE: Smer confirms its lead among parties; independent candidates dominate

THE RULING Smer party of Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed its position as the party with the highest level of popular support in the November 15 municipal elections. Candidates of Smer were elected as mayors in 847 municipalities, according to the unofficial results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office.

Candidates of Smer were elected as mayors in 847 municipalities, according to the unofficial results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office.

Independent candidates, many of them however supported by a political party or a coalition of political parties, will take mayoral seats in 1,104 municipalities.

Of the opposition parties, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) took the most, 122 mayoral posts, while Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) will control 107 mayoral posts. Most-Híd candidates were successful in 87 municipalities and Sieť will have 52 mayors in the next four years.
