THE TOWN of Humen-né in eastern Slovakia commemorated the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I with a re-enactment of the battles from 100 years ago within the event Karpaty / Carpathians 1914/2014. The fights during that were intense in the Upper Zemplín town.

Martin Drobňák of the co-organising Club of Military History Beskydy informed the TASR newswire that in commemorating the 100th anniversary, they decided, in cooperation with the town’s administration, to focus on the battle for the town.

In mid-October, around 300 participants from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine showed 4,000 visitors a narrated re-enactment of the fighting to seize the control of the town between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies.

Drobňák said that the goal was to prepare a daylong event for the public – not just fun, but also educational about the history of this region in the war period as well.
