SLOVAKIA’S authorities granted Slovak citizenship to 296 people from 44 countries last year altogether. The most came from Ukraine (70), Serbia (67) and the Czech Republic (24), the SITA newswire reported.
The authorities also granted the citizenship to 17 people who lost it as a result of naturalisation in the US. Together 64 people got it based on the valid international agreement. This stems from the 2013 report on the immigration policy the government acknowledged on November 26.
The Interior Ministry granted Slovak citizenship to 144 men and 152 women. It also issued certificates on the status of the Slovak living abroad to 80 people. This concerned mostly people living in Serbia and Ukraine, SITA wrote referring to the report.
Ten foreigners received Slovak citizenship based on the exception to the law which allows granting it to people who significantly contributed to Slovakia’s economy, science, technologies, culture, society or sport. Forty-one people got citizenship after getting married to Slovaks. Moreover, 113 children received Slovak citizenship in 2013.
The Interior Ministry rejected 36 applications last year, SITA wrote.
