ALTOGETHER, 11 important manuscripts and printed literary heritage from the collections of the Slovak National Library (SNK) were published in the World Digital Library (WDL). It is a project of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. on which UNESCO and its 181 partners, including libraries, archives, museums, galleries and educational institutions from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas cooperate.

The WDL currently contains about 11,000 documents from a total of 193 countries, the SITA newswire reported.

“Of the documents from the SNK, the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. published mediaeval and modern manuscripts, historical prints and maps that are jewels of Slovak and European book culture, art, history, geography and heraldry on the WDL portal,” SNK spokesperson Zuzana Stančíková told SITA.

Users from across the world can use the WDL to learn about the most precious documents from the written cultural heritage of Slovakia, whose cultural and historical importance outstretches our region. According to SNK head Katarína Krištofová, the publishing of documents in the database will significantly contribute to the international reputation of the SNK, as well as the country itself.

The published documents include fragments of old Slavonic manuscripts from the 13th and 15th century, a mediaeval Latin illuminated liturgical codex, previous prints from the 16th century, as well as younger works from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The SNK even plans to extend the collection, SITA reported.
