IT owners to invest in Projekt N of Sme defectors

SIX co-owners of Bratislava-based IT security company ESET are set to invest in the newly emerging Projekt N media, which has been set up by defectors from the Sme daily, TASR learnt on December 18.

SIX co-owners of Bratislava-based IT security company ESET are set to invest in the newly emerging Projekt N media, which has been set up by defectors from the Sme daily, TASR learnt on December 18.

Financial group Penta made steps to acquire 50 percent of the shares in the major publishing house, Petit Press, which partially owns The Slovak Spectator, and is the publisher of the flagship daily newspaper Sme. This resulted in the resignation of Sme Editor-in-Chief Matúš Kostolný and his deputy editors as well as large part of the editorial office of Sme in October. Kostolný and others announced the launch of a new website called Projekt N.

ESET representatives claimed that the support they will provide will not translate in any interference in the content of the outlet.

“It entails a personal initiative on the part of Maroš Grund, Rudolf Hrubý, Richard Marko, Peter Paško, Miroslav Trnka amd Anton Zajac,” said ESET spokeswoman Zuzana Hošalová, as quoted by TASR, adding that the aforementioned co-owners of the IT security company are supporting a number of business and philanthropic projects both in Slovakia and around the world that are not directly related with ESET’s activities.

“We’ll communicate with the editorial staff of Projekt N just like with any other media outlet. The support of independent media by our owners won’t mean any influence of content and/or negotiating hidden endorsement of any kind,” emphasised Hošalová, as quoted by TASR, adding that there are no agreements between ESET and Projekt N.

ESET is currently not planning to advertise in the printed or online version of Projekt N and it will not arrange for subscriptions of the media either. Any potential changes to this decision will be subject to ESET’s trade and marketing department in Slovakia.
