OPERA: Franz Lehár’s The Land of Smiles is the second operatic premiere of the Slovak National Theatre (SND) this season, conducted by Peter Valentovič (alternately Dušan Štefánek) and directed by Juraj Nvota, with Slovak libretto. The romantic operetta in three acts offers a lighter genre. First performances take place on January 17 (19:00) and 18 (17:00) in the new SND building in Pribinova 17 in Bratislava. LIVE MUSIC: Visegrad Masala – This project brings musicians of three Visegrad-Four (Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary) countries to Bratislava. Masala Soundsystem from Poland (traditional music+modern electronic music, DJ 3CK from Slovakia (turn-tablist) and Áron Szilágyi from Hungary (player of the dermbľa) to Bratislava. They shall record a joint album and make a tour in all four Visegrad countries.

DRAMA: Elfriede Jelinek: Rechnitz - The Angel of Death Rechnitz – This drama piece by Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature is the best play written in the German language in 2009. The play is based on actual events involving the murder of 200 Jews who were forced labourers at Countess Bathyany’s party. This performance has English subtitles.

CATHEDRAL: Tatra Ice Cathedral, the artificial structure built from 280 Belgian ice blocks by Pilsen (Czech Republic) based sculptor František Bálek has again become a hit of visitors to the High Tatras.
