SLOVAKIA’S counter-terrorism commando unit Lynx should move from its current location in Rusovce to Stupava, a town near Bratislava, in two years, the Sme daily reported in its January 22 issue. The former missile base near the Karpatia Hotel will be transformed into a training facility.

“The new practice range will not be build sooner than in 24 months as there is problem with expropriation,” Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák told the press after the meeting of the parliamentary committee for defence and security, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

The ministry has already acquired one third of the lands in the chosen locality. The construction of the practice range will, however, not be cheap. It will cost several millions of euros, Kaliňák said, as quoted by SITA.

The proposal was supported also by Ľubomír Galko, former defence minister and current MP for Freedom and Solidarity (SaS).

The committee’s session was attended also by inhabitants of Rusovce. According to the the long hours of gun shots everyday are unbearable. They also warned that the special forces used to shoot at the range late into the night.

The inhabitants of Rusovce have already given the Interior Ministry a petition to abolish the training centre of the police corps in 2012. It was signed by 170 people.
