The lesser spotted female eagle nicknamed Anička who has a solar transmitter attached to her body, enabling scientists to follow her and live broadcast her whereabouts, has ventured the furthest from Slovakia since scientists began tracking in September 2013
“She flew to South Africa, and now [as of January 21] is about 200
kilometres to the north of its capital, Johannesburg,” head of the Tatra National park administration, Pavol Majko, told the TASR newswire. “She moved away from her nesting site at the foot of Tatras for 8,300 kilometres in a beeline. However, it is hard to even imagine how many kilometres she had flown actually.” She spent the first half of January in Botswana, close to the Sua Pan Lake, Majko told the SITA newswire.
Anička left Slovakia in September and having flown above the Middle East, Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda, she made it to Lake Victoria. In November, she got delayed for three weeks by rains in Congo – she had her hunt for food complicated and spent most of the rain in treetops. In this time, environmentalists also lost contact with her due to weak signal.
By mid December, the contact was re-established and she was detected in Zimbabwe.
