The Slovak authorities have decided to deny entry to Slovakia to Hungarian President László Sólyom on August 21, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced at an extraordinary press conference on the same day, newswire TASR reported.

According to Fico, Slovakia based its decision on relevant legal regulations of the European Union and Slovakia. A related diplomatic note was handed by Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry to a representative of the Hungarian Embassy in Slovakia earlier in the day, he added.

Solyom was scheduled to come on a private visit to the Slovak town of Komárno (Nitra region) to attend the ceremonial unveiling of a statue of Hungarian King Stephen I, wrote TASR.

Sólyom did not cross the border and convened a press conference on the Hungarian side of the bridge between the Slovak town of Komárno and the Hungarian town of Komárom instead, according to TASR.
