LOCALS from the town of Lučenec in Banská Bystrica Region gathered there with representatives of the Russian Embassy in Slovakia on Thursday to commemorate the victory over fascism in the Second World War.
“The reverential commemorative event was also attended by a number of people who lived in the Second World War,” Ján Šnúrik from the Lučenec town hall told the TASR newswire.
He added that the event was held to commemorate the many lives lost during the war - not only soldiers from the area and servicemen from other countries, but also the 728 inhabitants of Lučenec who died in Nazi-controlled concentration camps. According to the official, during the liberation of the town 146 Soviet, 196 Romanian, 55 Hungarian and 165 German soldiers lost their lives.
