Kaník unanimously elected as SDKÚ caucus leader

THE SLOVAK Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) caucus will now be headed by Ľudovít Kaník, who was elected unanimously by the party’s caucus members, SDKÚ chairman Pavol Frešo announced on June 27.

THE SLOVAK Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) caucus will now be headed by Ľudovít Kaník, who was elected unanimously by the party’s caucus members, SDKÚ chairman Pavol Frešo announced on June 27.

The SDKÚ caucus came under threat of dissolution, in line with parliamentary rules, following the recent departure of Mikuláš Dzurinda and Ivan Mikloš from the party, as the number of MPs in the caucus looked set to fall below eight. The caucus did not cease to exist, however, because party vice-chair Ivan Štefanec agreed with Dzurinda and Mikloš for them to remain in it. Druzinda and Mikloš left the party on June 4, citing dissatisfaction with the development within the party.

Eugen Jurzyca, replacing Štefanec, who is leaving for the European Parliament, wants to focus on the economy, education and transparency. He sees consolidation of public finances and connecting the education system with the labour market as top priorities for the SDKÚ, the SITA newswire wrote.
