Teachers want to discuss salary hikes with government again

SALARY hikes for teachers will remain one of the most burning issues in education for the months to come, as teachers unions intend to hold talks on the matter not only with newly appointed Education Minister Peter Pellegrini but also with the finance, interior and labour ministers, the TASR newswire reported.

SALARY hikes for teachers will remain one of the most burning issues in education for the months to come, as teachers unions intend to hold talks on the matter not only with newly appointed Education Minister Peter Pellegrini but also with the finance, interior and labour ministers, the TASR newswire reported.

"Talks with the education minister alone won't suffice,” Pavel Ondek, chair of the Education and Science Employees Trade Union told TASR. “We'll certainly also approach the finance minister and the labour minister, who has a say on the salary rates of non-teaching employees, and quite likely the interior minister, whose office has under its remit district offices that run bilingual secondary schools and specialised schools."

According to Ondek, his union wants to discuss with Pellegrini new measures already agreed on by the minister's predecessor Dušan Čaplovič.

"Even the public understands that more money for education will bring about a better future for our children and youth," Ondek said as quoted by TASR.

The talks are slated to continue through late August.
