Police charge Košecký

FORMER executive director of the Economy Ministry-owned company MH Development Ladislav Košecký was charged with violating his duties when administering someone else’s property, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák told the press on November 5. He added that the National Criminal Agency has already launched a second prosecution in the case.

Meanwhile, Economy Minister Pavol Pavlis said he appointed new authorised representative of the firm and exchanged members of the supervisory board, the SITA newswire reported.

The dubious activities at MH Development were revealed by independent MP Miroslav Beblavý who sent a letter to Pavlis in late October informing him that Košecký had been renting a Toyota Land Cruiser from the company Mertimex, whixh he owns. He also said Košecký used state money to pay off the fine of nearly €13,000 he received from the parliamentary committee for conflict of interest for having a position in a state firm and simultaneously managing a private firm, which is forbidden by law, the Sme daily reported.

Košecký was subsequently dismissed from his post.

Because of the charges laid, the ministers of ruling Smer party do not see the reason for the special session that is scheduled for November 5, during which the opposition wants to discuss the case. The session was initiated by Beblavý who does not like the decision of Smer not to send inspectors of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) to the company.

Kaliňák said that they will not avoid NKÚ in this case. They plan to ask it for checking some revelations of the police since not all of them will be defined as crimes, as reported by SITA.

Pavlis, meanwhile, said that immediately after learning about the case, he ordered the internal audit at the MH Development, the TASR newswire wrote. In the future, he plans to merge the firm with MH Invest company, and later place it under the management of the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO).

“I do not see the reason for the special session to take place,” Pavlis said, as quoted by TASR. “We acted quickly, effectively. In one week we solved the whole problem.”

The minister is convinced that the supervisory board of MH Development would certainly reveal the problems to which MP Miroslav Beblavý pointed in late October during final accounts and controls that take place in the end of the year, as reported by SITA.

Beblavý, however, told the press on November 5 that the MH Development company needs independent inspection of its management, and not the inspection of bodies that operate under Smer.

The special session did not take place due to Smer MPs not approving the programme.
