We were also involved when Vladimír Mečiar threatened democracy, or when all Europe watched the no-confidence vote in the government of Iveta Radičová, conditioned on our participation in the eurozone bailout fund. In short, we continue to fulfill the mission started by founders Erik Koomen, Richard Lewis, Daniel Stoll and Rick Zednik when they founded The Slovak Spectator.
“I am thrilled that what we created in 1995 has not only survived for two decades, but thrived,” Zednik said.
It has done so because it has attracted highly talented Slovaks who believed in the cause of an independent voice that connects Slovakia with the outside world. Many of these Slovaks who contributed to The Slovak Spectator have gone on to play leading roles in society, including as Ambassador, MP, Government Minister, and editor or publishers of the country's leading Slovak-language newspapers. “That legacy -- of making our cause a cause that rising Slovaks embraced -- is what I am most proud of,” Zednik added.
Besides the bi-weekly The Slovak Spectator, the company publishes Book of Lists, Career Guide & Employment Guide, Investment Advisory Guide, and the country’s premier travel guide: Spectacular Slovakia.
“Our vision to inform, entertain and educate as Slovakia's English-language newspaper burns as bright today as it did 20 years ago.” Stoll said.
Amid always difficult market conditions, the operations of The Slovak Spectator are a constant fight for independence and balance. We are truly a part of a unique journey, which is enabled by my colleagues, our readers, advertisers, embassies, as well as the collaboration with our mother company, Petit Press.
This year, we have already managed to launch a totally new website. In the coming weeks, we will publish a book from our Cooking with Ambassadors series, as well as updated edition of our Spectacular Slovakia. I am also happy to introduce you to new Editor-in-Chief Michaela Terenzani, who has been with us since 2008 and who is taking the torch passed from Beata Balogová who now leads the editorial team at the daily Sme.
We look forward to being here for our readers, and to continue presenting Slovakia to the world. Happy Spectator anniversary to all of you.
