Defence Minister Martin Glváč and Bratislava Mayor Ivo Nesrovnal signed an agreement in Bratislava on May 18, the TASR newswire reported.
“Each capital in the European Union has this kind of museum, so Bratislava and Slovakia deserve it, too,” said Nesrovnal, pointing out that Bratislava does not have such a museum yet.
Glváč believes that experts would draft economic, technical and construction documents to lay the groundwork for discussion and that concrete proposals will be produced with the same dynamics that have accompanied the creation of the working group.
Slavín, designed by Ján Svetlík, is the ideal site to house the museum, as it is a memorial, a military cemetery and an ‘identity-forming’ place in Bratislava. Specifics vis-a-vis the size of the possible museum, the cost incurred and the museum’s administrator aren’t known for now. At any rate, Glváč said that the ministry is planning to chip in for the cost of the project, but will also seek sponsorship and funds from the embassies of countries whose soldiers helped liberate Bratislava during WWII.
