OPERA: Nabucco - Opera in three acts in Italian language by Guiseppe Verdi. Nabucco is conducted by Jaroslav Kyzlink, directed by Zuzana Gilhuus. Choirmaster is Ladislav Kaprinay. GASTRONOMY: Vegánska večera / Vegan Dinner – Vegans or non-vegans, newcomers or old friends, individuals or groups, everybody is invited. Vegánska večera (VV) is a community that allows everyone who wants to join in or give a direction to create social space. Instead of paying admission fees, cook vegan food (without meat, eggs, dairy products, honey and other animal substances) and bring it and share with others. LANGUAGE/MEETING: Month of Francophony – March is annually a month of French language and culture when the French Institute organises a series of events and tries to popularise this language in Slovakia. A week of French films, Crème de la Crème, exhibitions, presentations and performances from this Francophony Month in 2016. A complex set of films divided into 4 sections (Crème de la Crème contemporary, Homecomings, 3xMarion and For Children) will be presented between March 10 and 16 in cinemas across the city (Film Europe, Mladosť, Lumiere) within Crème de la Crème. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Tomasi, Šostakovič – Violin Concerto in E Minor by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is the last major work of this German composer. Poetic concert was devoted to his friend Ferdinand David. The programme also consists of Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Henri Tomasi and Concerto in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra by Dmitry Shostakovich, as performed by Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Rastislav Štúr, Tibor Bertók – violin, Stanislav Masaryk – trumpet, Matias Alzola - piano. OPERA: Rigoletto - Opera in three acts in the Italian language by Giuseppe Verdi. Victor Hugo’s drama Le Roi s’Amuse was an ideal story for Verdi, full of great passions, critical view on the society and touching personal line. The opera is conducted by Peter Valentovič, directed by Martin Schüler, music rehearsed by Friedrich Haider, and choirmaster is Pavel Procházka. BALLET: Frida – Frida Kahlo’s life story endowed with exceptional intelligence, versatile artistic talent, but on the other side affected by misfortune and suffering is the topic of the feature-length dance performance. Dance scenes from the life of this surrealist painter choreographed and directed by Robert Balogh. Music used by Elliot Goldenthal, Astor Piazzolla & Gary Burton, Richard Galliano, Arvo Pärt, Benny Goodman, Keith Jarrett. PREDNÁŠKA/ MEETING: Shakespeare žije / Shakespeare Lives – An encounter with professor Martin Hilský and Ľubomír Feldek, renowned translators and interprets of the work of William Shakespeare. The event will take a place on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death, which the British Council organises worldwide. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Solamente Naturali – The M-Cycle of Special Concerts, Songs and Dances of Slovak, Moravian, German and English baroque manuscripts will be performed by the Solamente Naturali and Teatro Posonii (traditional puppet theatre). WORLD MUSIC: Vandrovali hudci / How the Fiddlers Wandered – The combination of two outstanding ensembles which uniquely combine folk, big-beat and folk music - called nowadays “world music”. BIRDWATCHING: Za dravcami na Devínske jazero / Watching Birds of Prey at Devínske Lake – A group walk to the area of Devínske Jazero Lake, focused on the birds of prey (White-tailed Eagle, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, Common Kestrel, Hen Harrier/ Northern Harrier, Goshawk and others) and birds living in floodplain forests (woodpeckers, tiny songbirds). The location is the Morava River floodplains, so particular route of walking will be therefore adjusted to the current state of water. BALLET: Angelika – Eugen Suchoň, one of the founders of Slovak music modernism, composed Angelika as a ballet pantomime. At the time he was merely a 17-year-old student of the Music School. Mauro di Candia, the author of choreography and director of the first production presents the concept of Angelika in an original, precise and pure ballet form. STAND-UP COMEDY: Jimmy Carr – The successful British comedian, actor, author, host and international star of stand-up comedy gives a performance in Bratislava as part of his Funny Business Tour, which crossed the English Channel after 200 performances in the UK. RUNNING: The ČSOB Bratislava Marathon – The upcoming 11th year of ČSOB Bratislava Marathon features as its most favourite discipline with the largest number of participants also this year half-marathon, the second most numerous discipline is relay-race, followed by marathon, mini-marathon and the Ten / Desiatka. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Vivaldi, Bach, Hatrik – The programme of this concert consists of Symphony in G Major No 2 by Antonio Vivaldi, Concerto for Cello, Strings and Basso Continuo in A Major by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Water Clock for Flute, Harp, Soprano and Strings; a work by Juraj Hatrík thus premiered. EXHIBITION: Kontinuum / Continuum – The current exhibition of Bratislava City Gallery presents to the public the collection of paintings by Slovak Ján Berger, created after 2000 and not yet exhibited. The collection of paintings in mythical style has its dominants and counterpoints. Some paintings specifically included by the author come from the earlier period. EXHIBITION: Strach z neznámeho / Fear of the Unknown – The migration crisis which we are facing is the most serious since the WW2. Millions of people have to leave their homes because of war or extreme poverty. The experience with other cultures is new and practically unknown for the post-communist countries. This exhibition is trying to break the barrier in communication between them. The native and foreign artists are focusing on refugees and our attitude towards them. EXHIBITION: On the Freakshow - Andy Pheby Paintings – Andy Pheby is a contemporary figurative painter who portrays people or things that can stand for people – benches, objects, animals. Chance plays a role in many works where liquid paint is pooled and thrown across the work. Pheby is influenced by painters such as Manet and Goya, whom he refers to in his work, as well as the colours used in Indian miniatures. EXHIBITION: Hľadanie identity / Searching for Identity – The art of painter with Slovak origin Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan, representative of the period between the two world wars in art, can be seen in the Mirbach Palace. He created expressionist paintings of Slovak rural areas in Orava, Liptov and Turiec. He was born as a Jew, but diex as a Christian in a Nazi concentration camp. All his life, the author was searching for his own identity. The exhibition seeks to present his work to the public, based on numerous image- and documentary materials. EXHIBITION: Caricature and Jazz – The exhibition focused on the blending of jazz and cartoon was presented as a support event of Dodo Šošoka Festival in Piešťany (commemorating the jazzman of this name). In Ticho you can see a complex set of cartoons created during five years according to the concept of Bobo Pernecký. PHOTO EXHIBITION: World War I – The Central-European House of Photography (SEDF) presents the third part in a series of international exhibitions from WW1. The series of photos called Red Poppy Fields are reflections of these terrible times in Europe. EXHIBITION: Spiders and Scorpions – More than 40 living animal species with safe inaccessible glass terrariums can be seen, cameras are allowed. Among other species, people can see one of the most dangerous spiders, the black widow (Lathrodectus mactans), the biggest one (Theraphosa stirmi) and the large scorpion (Pandinus imperator). The exhibition corrects widespread myths and mistaken facts about these species. EXHIBITION: Silent and Glass / Ticho a sklo – Exhibition hailing almost 25 years of the existence of this private gallery focused on glass presents several generations of glass artists - the best works of students of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava-VŠVU – and their works which are diverse, with a wide spectrum of technological and philosophical variations in design and creation. EXHIBITION: The Little Prince – This book was published April 6, 1943 in New York and shortly afterwards also in French edition with illustrations. The Little Prince is the most famous work by writer, poet and pilot Antoin de Saint-Exupéry. Twenty original colour lithographs by the author come from the collection of German collector Michael Andreas Wahle.
