Slovakia may receive some funds for its gas projects from the European Commission. The country’s gas transporter Eustream has requested co-financing for the construction of the Slovak-Polish gas pipeline, and also for a grant to co-finance a feasibility study on the Eastring gas pipeline project, the SITA newswire reported.

The call of the company, owned by the Czech energy group Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH) and the Slovak state, has also been supported by other affected countries, namely Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

“Both investment proposals have the status of projects of common interest (PCI) for the European Union,” said Eustream’s spokesperson Pavol Kubík, as quoted by SITA.

The Slovak-Polish gas pipeline should be constructed in about three years. As a result, Slovakia may be fully connected with the Baltic Sea as of 2019. The transport capacity of the pipeline should be 5.7 billion cubic metres a year. It will cost Slovakia some €100 million. The total length of the pipeline is projected to be 164 kilometres, of which more than 100 will run through Slovakia, SITA wrote.

The pipeline is part of the corridor of north-south gas links that connect the gas networks and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals across central and eastern Europe. It should also allow Poland to access the so-called southern corridor in the future, while Slovaks will be able to enter the Polish market, including the local LNG terminal.

The Eastring project, which should run through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, should have a capacity of 20 billion cubic metres in the initial phase, which should then increase to 40 billion cubic metres in the final phase, SITA reported.

The final length of the bi-directional pipeline is projected at 744-1,015 kilometres. The expected costs of the first phase amount to €1.14-1.52 billion. The project should connect the gas infrastructure of western Europe with that of south-eastern Europe, which should increase the safety of gas deliveries for the whole region. This should be secured by more varied natural gas resources situated in the Caspian, eastern Mediterranean and Middle East regions, SITA wrote.
