Ružinov has the largest number of homeless among Bratislava's boroughs, one in every five, as showed the results from the historically first census of the homeless from autumn of last year. Many homeless live also in Vrakuňa and the Old Town.

Half of the homeless suffer from long-term health problems, 61 percent faces distraint proceedings and more than half have problems with debts.

“Research showed that almost 40 percent of people were homeless for 10 and more years,” said Nina Beňová from the citizens’ association Proti prúdu for the TASR newswire. This fact is important because it proves that the system does not offer the possibility to break free from homelessness, she added.

More than 61 percent stated their permanent residence in Bratislava. The most homeless people live either on the street or in shelters, where 1,310 people were counted, almost 64 percent. Their age is usually between 50 and 64 years. Almost three-quarters are men. In shelters were also 24 children, more than 90 percent located in Bratislava facilities. In these facilities volunteers counted 754 homeless, 494 adults and 260 children. The age of those people using social facilities is between 25 and 49.

“Homeless people usually live alone, rarely with a partner or friend,” said Marek Papajčík, the spokesperson of Bratislava city council as cited by TASR.

The authorities in the capital cooperated with the census with the Institute for Labour and Family Research (IVPR), alongside non-governmental organisations and several dozen volunteers. In total, 106 people walked the streets of Bratislava at night in November, when the census took place.

The aim of the census was not only to find out the total number of homeless people, but also to create a foundation of statistics about them. Volunteers tried to get answers to questions such as: if a homeless person wanted to overwinter in a shelter, where they slept last year, if there was a day in the last week when they didn’t have a warm meal, or if they grew up in an orphanage.
