Pohoda brings new attractions

Visitors to Slovakia’s biggest festival can enjoy various music styles and activities

A city of tents will accommodate roughly 30,000 people at Slovakia’s biggest music festival, Pohoda, which will take place between July 6 and 8 at Trenčín airport.

The 21st year of the festival will offer performances of various music styles, including alternative, indie, electronic, world, punk and classical. The music programme will be accompanied by activities focused on literature, dance, visual art, film and theatre.

“We have three exceptional music projects I am especially proud of,” said the festival’s director Michal Kaščák, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

These include the live performance of the album “There Were Eleven of Us” by Milan Lasica, as well as the performance of project Pohoda 21, which was composed by one Czech and two Slovak authors. Three seven-minute-long classical compositions will be performed in cooperation with the symphonic orchestra of the Slovak Radio, making a 21-minute-long performance during the 21st year of the festival, Kaščák said.

The third special act is Pohoda 97, when all 38 bands who performed during the first year of the summer festival will meet on one stage.

“It will make two festivals in one,” Kaščák said, as quoted by TASR.

This year’s main headliners are alt-J, M.I.A., Solange, Birdy and Ylvis. Other performers include Thurston Moore Group, TaxiWars, London Elektricity Big Band, Benjamin Clementine, Dillon, Future Islands, Ho99o9, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. In all, more than 120 acts from around the world will perform on 19 stages and tents.

Visitors can create their own schedule at the festival’s website, selecting the performances they want to visit by clicking on "line-up" or "timeline".

What’s new?

This year’s Pohoda is also meant to be a festival of services and food, according to Kaščák. New compostable dishes will make this year's festival more ecological. There will also be returnable glasses, separated waste and ecological guides.

Visitors will also be able to get toothpaste, shampoo and other toiletries for free. The festival has made available make 156 showers with hot water and 500 chemical toilettes, TASR wrote.

The festival is organising yoga and other sports activities and will hold the first festival race, whose winners will receive a ticket for next year.

Another new aspect of this year’s festival is a tent where visitors can learn about health topics. Another tent will issue medicine, TASR reported.

Visitors can reach the festival using with trains from Košice and Bratislava and by four suburban lines.
