People came out to the streets in the freezing weather on the evening of February 26 to light candles in the memory of Ján Kuciak, an investigative reporter for the Aktuality.sk news website, and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, who were found shot dead in their house in Veľká Mača the day before.
Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar admitted Kuciak might have been murdered in connection to his investigative work. The murder of a journalist is an unprecedented deed in Slovakia.
Candles were lit at the SNP Square in Bratislava and in front of the editorial office of Aktuality.sk.
Similar gatherings were also organised in other places around Slovakia, as well as in the Czech cities of Prague and in Brno.
Slovak journalists are organising a march to commemorate the murdered journalist and his partner on March 13 in Bratislava.
