Alleged Košice bomber detained

Feature Photo Food prices rose by 7.4 percent since last May and were a large contributor to the 4-percent overall annual rise in consumer prices, Slovakia’s Statistics Office announced on May 13. Analysts attributed the higher prices to global prices for crude oil and agricultural commodities, higher costs for regulated products in Slovakia, and the VAT rate changing from 19 percent to 20 percent at the beginning of 2011. Parliament adopts 2011 state budget

MPs fail to select a new general prosecutor – again

In a secret ballot on Thursday, December 2, the incumbent general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka received 74 votes, while the joint candidate of the ruling coalition, Jozef Čentéš, got 73. Attack on the National Security Office remains unpunished

The verdict is not yet valid however, as the prosecution has challenged it. Feature Photo The final unofficial results of the parliamentary elections published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office after all the valid votes were counted show that Smer was the most popular party, with 34.8 percent of the vote. However, the overall election result has given hope to the centre-right parties that they, and not Robert Fico’s Smer, will be able to form the next government. Smer and SNS would get 71 seats while an eventual coalition of SDKÚ, KDH, SaS and Most-Híd would have 79 seats in parliament.

Major fire in Košice

Levoča added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List

Milan Rastislav Štefánik returns
