Ski Window: Ideal snow weather continues

You can count on more snow.
MARCH is finally here, but if you expect it to bring with it the pleasant first sunshine of spring, forget it. Lady Winter has no plans to leave.

Meteorologists expect March to be an especially cold month, which will certainly please skiers. Snow conditions are great almost everywhere.

This week we can expect changeable weather with snow, with the first half of the week seeing cold temperatures. This should last until mid-March. Night-time temperature will drop to -10 in the mountains at levels over 1,000-metres, while during the day they will climb to -4 or -5 degrees Celsius. Moist air will arrive in Slovakia from the south-west starting Thursday (March 9), bringing snow and rain. However, it should not result in any significant snowmelt, since night-time temperatures will remain below zero, climbing to +5 in the day.

If you are planning to take a winter vacation in March, you can certainly count on fun in the snow. Each Wednesday, from 19:30 to 22:00, the Hrebienok resort in the High Tatras offers night sledding.

Demanding skiers should try the reopened slope under Chleb in the Vrátna dolina ski resort with a modern 8-person cableway that was launched on March 4. If you don't feel like driving, take the ski bus which collects skiers from Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra and Trenčín and takes them not only to Vrátna but also to Veľká Rača, Donovaly, and Kubínska hoľa (25 kilometres north of Ružomberok).

You will find more information on ski buses at the resorts' web pages, which can be found at www.holidayinfo.sk together with snow forecasts.

One more thing: The special lift ticket sales - Sk600 at Jasná and Sk640 in the High Tatras (Tatranská Lomnica and Starý Smokovec) - are still on offer. The price includes a ski ticket and a train ticket from any place in Slovakia. For example, if you travel from Bratislava to Jasná (the Low Tatras), buy the special ticket at the Bratislava train station and in Liptovský Mikuláš (a train station 15 kilometres from Jasná) exchange it for a ski pass.
