Fico, Beňová and Kaliňák top Smer list

THE OPPOSITION Smer party has chosen Robert Fico, MEP Monika Beňová and MP Robert Kaliňák for the top three places on the party's list of candidates for the general election on June 17.

The entire list of 150 names was approved by the Smer Presidium on March 5.

Former HZDS MP Dušan Jarjabek and Slovak national football team coach Dušan Galis were also placed in what are considered to be safe positions on the list, the TASR news wire reported.

Fico announced following the meeting that the fourth, fifth and sixth places on the list had been reserved for Smer vice-chairmen Pavol Paška, Dušan Čaplovič and Igor Šulaj, followed by shadow transport minister Ľubomír Vážny, and the chief of the Smer election staff, Marek Maďarič.

Fico also confirmed that there are no representatives of the Trade Union Confederation (KOZ) on the Smer candidate list.
