Politicians' wives stay out of election campaign

MOST wives of Slovak politicians would rather stay out of the campaign for the June 17 general elections. Only Eva Dzurindaová, wife of the prime minister, and Helena Hrušovská, wife of the leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), plan to take any part in the campaign.

Even they, however, will largely remain in the background, the Pravda daily wrote on April 30.

"I'll accompany my husband, I see no problem in that," Dzurindová told the daily, adding that she would even be willing to take part in a public debate with the wives of other politicians, although she admits that this is unlikely.

Hrušovská said that she views her husband's political activities as his job, and will therefore support him in them.

The wives of major opposition politicians such as Smer leader Robert Fico and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia boss Vladimír Mečiar will not be involved in the campaign in any way, however.

Smer's main campaign organizer, Marek Maďarič, said that "our chairman never used his relatives to promote his party politics or himself".
