Coalition announces major changes

THE NEW Smer-SNS-HZDS coalition yesterday agreed to impose a new tax on monopolies and banks and to introduce a reduced VAT rate on selected items.

The coalition also plans to re-evaluate the second pillar of the pension system and will also set a minimum pension, increase the minimum wage and cancel the Sk20 and Sk50 health care fees. The coalition also wants to increase the state benefit at childbirth for the first child to Sk20,000.

The coalition leaders did not specify these plans, however. The new government's program manifesto should be ready by the end of July so that parliament can vote on the document by August 3, the SME daily reported.
