Smer's Šulaj heading to tax directorate

THE FORMER shadow finance minister of the ruling Smer party, Igor Šulaj, should replace the current director of the Slovak Tax Directorate Mária Machová, the SME daily wrote.

The final decision on the nomination will be made by the Coalition Council and later confirmed by the government.

Šulaj was a key figure behind Smer's proposals prior to general elections for a change in the tax structure. He suggested instituting a so-called "millionaire tax" of 25 percent, higher taxation for dominant companies, natural monopolies, and banks, as well as the taxation of dividends.
