HZDS wants its man to head NBÚ

VLADMÍR Mečiar's Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), a minor partner in the Slovak ruling coalition, wants its candidate to become the new head of the National Security Office (NBÚ), which is responsible for vetting people and companies with access to classified information.

The HZDS candidate would thus replace Aurel Ugor, who was nominated to lead the NBÚ by the previous government.

Ugor's recall should be on the parliamentary agenda at the upcoming session in September, the Pravda daily wrote.

"We are interested in this post," said HZDS MP Ján Kovarčík, although he would not specify who the party would put forward for the top NBÚ position.

The Slovak media has reported recently that Mečiar and the HZDS have been angered by the refusal of their coalition partners, principally the Smer party, to appoint HZDS candidates to top posts in the police corps and the secret service.
