Cabinet to debate energy prices

THE CABINET is to meet today to discuss its strategy towards energy companies. The Economy Ministry wants electricity prices to be reduced by 5.4 percent, natural gas prices by 1.39 percent and water prices by 5 percent, but has not yet revealed how it intends to force energy firms to go along with the cuts.

On the contrary, energy firms such as heating companies and the SPP gas utility have requested that the ÚRSO independent market regulator approve further price rises for their products by October.

The ÚRSO has postponed its decision on SPP’s price rise request to give the firm time to withdraw it, in the event that it comes to terms with the government.
