Poll: Ruling parties enjoy strong support

A RECENT poll by the Slovak Statistics Bureau shows that the parties of the ruling coalition in Slovakia enjoy strong support among voters.

PM Robert Fico's Smer leads the popularity charts with 39.8 percent support, slightly down from the month before yet much higher than the party’s election result of 29.14 percent.

The far-right Slovak National Party (SNS) jumped in the standings to become Slovakia's second most popular party with 11.9 percent support, up slightly from its 11.73 percent election result.

The third party in the ruling coalition, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, scored 11.8 percent in the latest poll, up from 8.79 percent in the elections.

Former PM Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union also scored 11.8 percent in the latest poll, down considerably from its 18.35 percent election result.

The Hungarian Coalition Party scored 10.5 percent support in September, as opposed to 11.68 in the elections, while the Christian Democratic Movement ranked last among Slovakia's parliamentary parties with 8.3 percent, virtually the same as its 8.31 percent election result.
