No January merger for telecom and post offices

THE JOINT regulatory office for electronic communications and postal services will not start functioning as of January 1, 2007, as originally proposed.

The Transport Ministry originally suggested establishing a joint authority by merging the Telecom Bureau (TÚ) and the Postal Office (PÚ). However, the ministry is still trying to decide whether the authority will be a state institution or whether it will be independent, as well as how it will be financed.

The new office should prevent conflicts of interest in regulating the telecom market. At the moment, the Telecom Bureau is financed by the Transport Ministry, which is also a shareholder in the dominant fixed-line operator, Slovak Telekom.
