Slovakia neglecting preparations for euro, says former coordinator

IVAN Štefanec, an MP for the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) who served as a coordinator for euro adoption under the previous right wing government, has said that Slovakia is not paying sufficient attention to preparations for the introduction of the euro.

Štefanec said that Slovakia should follow the example of Slovenia, which managed to adopt the euro in both cash and non-cash payment systems at the same time on January 1, 2007. He noted that despite expectations, the new government in Slovakia has not yet appointed a new coordinator for the euro introduction.

He also noted that the position of National Bank of Slovakia vice-governor for monetary policy has been vacant since the spring, after President Ivan Gašparovič refused to appoint a candidate approved by parliament under the previous ruling coalition.

Štefanec also criticized the fact that the government has not yet organized a meeting of the National Coordination Commission for Euro Adoption, nor has it updated the national plan for the common EU currency.

"The government is threatening Slovakia's chance to adopt the euro as of January 1, 2009 through its irresponsible attitude towards this issue", he said.
