Mečiar undergoes heart surgery

VLADIMÍR Mečiar, the head of the ruling Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), underwent a multiple-bypass heart operation on January 21 in Banská Bystrica in Central Slovakia.

A team of doctors from Banská Bystrica and Košice performed several bypasses, and said after the operation that it had gone smoothly, "with no major problems". The team was to give further details at a press conference today.

According to the Slovak Radio public broadcaster, if no complications occur, Mečiar could return to politics within a month.
