Opposition rallies forces against government

RECORD high support for the ruling Smer party has forced the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), and Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) to unite their efforts against the government.

"We are thinking about ways of taking part in constructive politics that will convince citizens that we are better than the politicians in the current ruling parties," said KDH chairman Pavol Hrušovský following a January 22 meeting of opposition parties, the Pravda daily wrote.

The opposition plans to coordinate their voting in parliament though they have ruled out the possibility of merging into a single bloc or party.

The opposition criticized the government mainly for the dominance of Smer in the current coalition government. "One [party] is ruling. The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) and the Slovak National Party are only filling seats," said ex-PM and SDKÚ chairman Mikuláš Dzurinda.

The opposition parties also stated that they had definitely rejected Dzurinda's earlier suggestion of joining with the HZDS as an alternative to the current ruling coalition.
