LESS THAN a month has passed since typical winter weather finally hit Slovak mountains, yet winter may already be packing its bags. Almost all ski resorts are reporting melting snow and temperatures above zero at altitudes below 1,300 metres, which means worsening skiing conditions. Lomnické Sedlo (2,200 m), the ski resort at the highest altitude in Slovakia, has had icy skiing conditions for a few days, but its 350 cm of snow is the deepest in the country, as well as in all of Europe. The ski slope from Skalnaté Pleso to Tatranská Lomnica, with about 80 cm, also offers the chance for an excellent skiing adventure. Its 5-kilometre route from Lomnické Sedlo to Lomnica descends 1,300 metres!

Truly excellent winter weather will probably not arrive this season, so skiers will have to get used to wet snow, which is usually more common in the spring. The forecast for the upcoming week shows unpredictable cloudy, rainy weather. Snow levels will only increase at altitudes above 1,200 metres.

A freestyle barmen's competition and dance shows are among the fun awaiting visitors in Veľká Rača on February 24 at the Becherovka Ski Show. In Jasná, visitors can catch a "pheasant" in snow competitions sponsored by Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) beer. Thrill seekers can go to Donovaly to try racing on snow scooters. Wellness packages have started to become part of the winter season in Slovakia as well, so after a day on the slope, try relaxing in Aquapark Tatralandia or in Thermal Park Bešeňová in the Liptov region. Skiers in the High Tatras should go to Poprad to enjoy relaxing in the local aquapark there.
