WWF demands a stop to wood harvesting

THE WORLDWIDE Fund for Nature (WWF) has requested that the Slovak government ensure the adequate protection of the Tatras National Park (TANAP) and stop the wood harvesting that is taking place in its valleys.

WWF specialists for the protection of nature and forest and water management in the Danube-Carpathian area made their wishes known at a news conference on May 2 in Čičmany (Žilina Region).

"The WWF regards the wood harvesting in the Tichá Dolina and Kôprová Dolina valleys to be illegal," said Juraj Vysoký, WWF Danube-Carpathian Program representative in Slovakia. "The main reason is because the harvesting is harming biotopes of European and national importance and disturbing the biotopes of protected species."

The director of WWF Danube-Carpathian Program, Michael Baltzer, said he was worried about the harvesting in these valleys, and emphasized that TANAP is well-known throughout Europe.
